Digestive disorders
Reflux, gas, bloating, and other digestive problems.
You are not alone…
As many as 60 million Americans experience digestive upset such as heartburn, bloating, or indigestion at least once a month. Twenty-five million have symptoms daily. While it is not clear how many children suffer from reflux and other digestive disorders, these problems are prevalent and on the rise. Some digestive disturbances have serious long-term consequences. Heartburn, also known as reflux or GERD, can irritate the lower esophagus. This chronic irritation can lead to esophageal cancer. For most children, digestive complaints cause discomfort and may affect sleep patterns.
Conventional medicine has its place…
Conventional medicines can be lifesaving in emergency situations and can control symptoms for many people. Unfortunately, they do not address the underlying cause of the symptoms. In addition, some medicines have serious side effects that make their use undesirable. For example, acid-blocking drugs disrupt the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. Resulting nutrient deficiencies reduce bone density and probably have a multitude of other effects.
You do have options…
Many people do not realize there are options in addition to conventional medicine that will actually make them better. By addressing the underlying causes of digestive disorders, patients experience reductions in symptoms, improvements in overall health, and reduced dependence on medications.

What do you do for patients with digestive disorders?
Digestive disorders are multi-faceted, requiring a comprehensive evaluation and treatment approach.
At Asheville Natural Health & Homeopathy, we treat digestive disorders using classical homeopathy, customized therapeutic diets, nutritional supplements, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.
Each patient’s plan is individualized – we have never found a “one size fits all” approach to be useful for the majority of people. We spend one to two hours with each pediatric patient on the first visit to make sure we understand very thoroughly what is going on in his or her body. We also spend time in follow up visits to make sure that healing is progressing as well as possible.
Homeopathy:
Homeopathy is part of the name of our practice because we believe so strongly in its power to cure disease. Homeopathic care involves the thorough evaluation of each patient’s exact symptoms. A single remedy is chosen that matches the subtleties of each case of disease. The remedy given restores balance to the many systems of the body that keep us well. [Read more about homeopathy.]
Diet:
There are different therapeutic dietary approaches that we will employ depending on each patient’s symptoms, sensitivities, lifestyle, and response to previous treatments. There is ample evidence in the conventional medical literature supporting therapeutic diets for digestive disorders. We stay abreast of that literature to add to our knowledge of the relationship between diet and disease.
Supplements:
Depending on your exact condition, we may recommend one or more nutritional supplements. These will help to restore gastrointestinal balance and reduce pain and inflammation. We use supplements that have strong support in the medical literature.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction:
The relationship between stress and digestive disorders is well-known. We help patients reduce the effects of stress on their health by teaching them simple mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques. MBSR involves exercises such as concentrating on one’s breathing to train the brain to remain calm during stress. Even a minimal time commitment to MBSR might help a child heal, while also ingraining a valuable habit that will last a lifetime.
What about my medications?
Conventional medicines can be lifesaving in emergency situations and can control symptoms in many people. Unfortunately, they do not address the underlying cause of the symptoms. In addition, some medicines have serious side effects that make their use undesirable.
At Asheville Natural Health & Homeopathy, our programs improve your child’s health on a fundamental level. Healthy bodies don’t need medications. Our goal is always to reduce or eliminate the need for medications, and we are generally successful.
Please don’t ever discontinue a medication without the consent of your physician, as that could be dangerous or uncomfortable.
